The Ama Dablam Expedition

The President and CEO of MATADOR Systems Pte Ltd, Mat Boylan along with fellow MATADOR eXtreme members, Dan Smith and Simon Alford will attempt to climb Ama Dablam in October. The Ama Dablam expedition is part of a one month long training course in preparation for an attempt on Mount Everest in the coming years.

Located in the Khumbu valley of Nepal, only 12 km from the summit of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam is a stunningly beautiful mountain that many people who visit the area will consider the best in the region. Ama Dablam means "Mother and Pearl Necklace" (the perennial hanging glacier is thought of as the pearl) and demands the attention of every climber. Soaring ridgelines and super-steep faces guard the summit from all but the experienced climber. From the summit you are surrounded by a vista of peaks like no other, five of the highest six peaks in the world are clearly visible.

The first ascent (via the SW ridge) of Ama Dablam was not made until the mid 1950’s by a strong NZ / USA team. The north ridge fell to a talented French team as late as 1979. Rated as a technically more difficult climb than Everest, Mat, Dan, and Simon will be attempting the summit from the SW ridge.

We will be providing dispatches on the MATADOR eXtreme Team’s progress over the coming weeks so please be sure to visit the MATADOR web-site on a regular basis. We wish Mat, Dan, and Simon the best of luck!
